Case Study on Energy Efficiency Improvements in Branch Banking – Bench Marking Exterior Lighting

High Performing Buildings Magazine publishes an online periodical that describes practices and technologies to promote high efficiency buildings techniques that can be widely deployed. A new case study on upgrading branch bank energy efficiency starts on Page 38 of the Winter 2015 issue. It presents a number of measures to upgrade a PNC Group branch bank to aggressively drive down energy use. With the lessons learned on this bank branch operation, it is serving as a model for their national portfolios of buildings in increasing energy efficiency at a very high return on investment and fast paybacks.

As in many energy efficiency projects, many measures were included. Among the efficiency measure strategies used were envelop upgrades, better windows, day-lighting, as well as, retrofitting interior and exterior lighting to LED fixtures.

Energy Efficiency Gained in Exterior Lighting

Of particular note they engaged Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to benchmark existing energy use and model future energy in the branch bank. Finding included:

  • Under the existing conditions exterior lighting was 28% of the total energy use or 32,085 kWh.
  • Upgrading to LED Lighting, along with the other measures, exterior lighting represents will results in 10% of total energy use or 15,298 kWh.

This change represent a net savings in energy of 16,787 kWh, or at 12 cents per kWh retail rate, a savings of $2,014.44 or a reduction of 52% in the exterior lighting alone.

Many of our clients have achieved 60% to 70% savings by replacing HPS or MH fixtures with more efficient LED exterior lighting. Many of these fixtures are achieving lumen per watt efficiencies that exceed convention sources, and direct light much more effectively. Thus resulting in better quality of lighting and much lower costs.
